Requirements: Previous overnight hiking experience. If not, talk to the trip leaders well before the trip meeting (contact by email or phone if you can’t catch us on a Tuesday night). Good fitness – this is a hard walk to the top of Victoria’s highest mountain. Gear for snow walking and potential storm conditions. Includes sturdy boots, snow shoes, full waterproof gear (tops and bottoms), sleeping bag and mat, warm clothes and a mountaineering tent. Much of this can be hired from the club. Full equipment list will be emailed to those who sign up before the trip meeting and available at the trip meeting. Food (breakfast x 2, lunch x 2, dinner x 1 plus plenty of snacks) Cash to pay your driver/car owner for fuel and maintenance costs (around $50-60) plus for dinner Friday and Sunday nights.
The weekend of 7-9 September: climb Mt Bogong and camp on the snow at the summit!
Friday night drive to Mountain Creek camp ground near Mt Beauty. Sat morning walk Staircase or Eskdale Spur (TBC) to the summit of Mt Bogong – approx 4-5 hours hard walking uphill. There is a hut with water half way up either spur. Set up tents on the summit. Play in the snow and/or do a side trip to Cleve Cole Hut if you’re particularly keen. Watch the sunset. Wake up early to see the sunrise. Walk back to the cars, back in Melbourne Sunday night after dinner in Bright or Milawa.
