Requirements: A basic level of fitness and an ability to feed yourself. Approximate cost including food breaks on the drive $80.
Sitting deep in the eponymous wilderness region the Pilot rises above the headwaters of the Murray river as an isolated peak with views on to the main range of the Australian Alps and Kosciusko.
The downside is it's rather a long drive necessitating a departure on the Friday afternoon to leave the entire Saturday free for the easy 12km walk along a management trail in to the campsite before an optional side trip for those feeling energetic; either up the mountain for the evening light or to the source of the Murray river. Lounging at the campsite is always an option with the grassy plains featuring a downed aeroplane, hut ruins, and typically both brumbies (feral horses) and kangaroos. Sunday is a free day for exploring the other peaks in the area and/or the abandoned mining settlement over the ridge. Monday returns to the cars nestled under the Cobberas on the same track for return home at a sensible hour.
With the options to be as energetic as you like this is suitable for almost anyone motivated while getting away from the tourist type activities. Camping will be across the border in the NSW wilderness region on a grassy plain without facilities of any kind, the upside being viewing down the Murray river for sunset with a delicious dinner.
