A weekend trip to Buchan for some more advanced stuff before O'week and the plethora of beginners trips start.
Definitions
Vertical Caving: Caving that requires the use of ropes specifically the abseiling and ascent of rope.
SRT: Single Rope Technique the methods used to get down and back up the rope.
Pitch: Drop unable to be climbed requiring the use of rope (or ladders) to desend/ascend; plan for this trip is obviously rope.
Trip plan:
Saturday Morning: Rope Skills training session probably a couple of hours learning a few things you cannot easily do hanging from the clubroom roof
Rest of weekend vertical caving possible caves include
Wilsons: Skills Session is done here so might as well do the whole cave.
Baby Berger: small entrance pitch some scrambling around then two part final pitch ending in 30+ metre free hanging drop.
Oolite: 5m entrance pitch, some wandering, a little climb and then the next pitches to the lower levels of the cave.
Stirling: 5-10m entrance pitch followed by approximately 20-30m free hang, to lower level of cave
Requirements:
Prior caving experience or ropes skills that is the ability to abseil and ascend rope.
Accommodation: Camping at national parks campground in Buchan (cost is usually about $8-10 per person). Campground facilities includes showers.
Gear Hire: $20 if horizontal caving only, $30 if vertical gear used (harnesses etc)
